The 3N Ferrite Family - The Electronic Sound of Silence

Updated: 4 days ago

The Ferroxcube 3N Family of Materials has been specifically designed for EMI Suppression!

What is EMI?

Electromagnetic interference (EMI) can significantly impact the performance of electronic devices. This interference can stem from noise generated by either the surrounding environment or the device itself.

Why Do We Need EMI Suppression Filters?

EMI suppression filters are designed to attach to circuits and devices, allowing desired currents signals to flow while eliminating unwanted currents signals from cables.

For more details on EMI suppression, check out our article, “Understanding the Need for Ferrite” here: Understanding the Need for Ferrite.

The 3N Ferrite Material Family

Ferroxcube’s 3N materials are specifically engineered to address EMI suppression needs. Developed by a leading company in the field, these materials excel in various applications due to their wide frequency response.

3N Family Material Properties and Advantages

The 3N materials provide a cost-effective alternative to nanocrystalline tape-wound cores, low-permeability nickel-zinc ferrites, and iron powder cores. Here’s a breakdown of the properties of the 3N family:

3N1

  • Wide Frequency Suppression: Effective up to 300 MHz for both conducted and radiated emissions.

  • High Permeability: Low frequency impedance for better performance.

  • Available Shapes: Toroidal shapes and snap-fit solutions.

The 3N1 material offers high impedance in the 30-300 MHz range and has a Curie temperature of 150 degrees, making it suitable for a variety of applications.

3N3 + 3N4

  • High Impedance: Effective up to 30 MHz with excellent saturation for applications with strong harmonics (e.g., motor drives and inverters).

  • Available Shapes: Toroidal, E, U, and more.

These materials are designed to handle common mode noise, which often reaches high amplitudes in applications like inverters and motor drives. The 3N3 and 3N4 materials from Ferroxcube maintain a high Bsat (significantly greater than typical EMI materials) while providing broad bandwidth for suppressing conducted emissions below 30 MHz. They are also suitable for high-temperature operations, with a Curie temperature of up to 200 degrees.

3N10 + 3N5

  • High Permeability: Ideal for low-frequency EMI suppression.

  • Excellent Noise Suppression: Effective below 10 MHz.

  • Best for Common Mode Filtering: Perfect for filtering switching harmonics.

  • Available Shapes: U, E, and Busbar shapes.

These materials are tailored for low-frequency EMI suppression, striking a balance between high permeability and extended frequency bandwidth.

3N2

  • High Resistivity and Permeability: Provides superior impedance from 0.1 to 100 MHz, suitable for various applications.

The 3N2 material maintains high impedance up to 300 MHz with a Curie temperature of 150 degrees, ensuring reliable performance across diverse conditions.

What If Standard Ferrite Shapes Don’t Fit My Needs?

While we offer standard shapes like U, E, toroidal, and snap-fit solutions off the shelf, Gateway recognises that one size doesn’t fit all.

Custom machined ferrite for busbar

The Ferrite Gateway Machine Shop has an exclusive range of 3N family ferrite blocks that can be machined to custom dimensions and geometries, achieving dimensional tolerances of ±0.005 mm

Custom machined ferrite for EMI suppression

Using our CNC machines, we provide a cost-effective alternative to creating a mould for pressing. We can accommodate small volumes, even as little as one unit, making it perfect for prototyping. Additionally, our specialised tooling allows for drilling and boring to achieve tighter tolerances. To explore our full list of ferrite machining capabilities, visit our dedicated page: Ferrite Gapping Solutions.

We also offer a range of EMI suppression cores available in our shop: EMI Suppression Cores.
